He Had No Home, No Family—Except for the Cat That Slept on His Chest Every Night

Late one night, outside a 24-hour laundromat, I saw a man curled up on a worn camping mat, his shoes held together by duct tape and a trash bag at his side. I started leaving food for them during my night shifts at the café, and he always made sure Hazel ate first. Their bond was a quiet testament to loyalty and love amidst hardship.

Then one week, they disappeared. Three nights in a row, no sign of the man or Hazel. People said a city crew had cleared the area, but no one knew where they went.

This morning, on my walk to work, I saw a flash of orange at the bus stop. It was Hazel, alone, looking right at me — as if she’d been waiting.
