What I Mistook for Trash Changed Everything

I saw death on the sidewalk, and everyone walked past. A small grass snake, crushed and forgotten, while the city roared around it. That image wouldn’t leave me. Then came the messages: snakes in gardens, on balconies, slipping under doors. Experts warned this wasn’t random. Heat, concrete, shrinking habitats—nature

The dead snake on the pavement wasn’t just a sad accident; it was a symptom. As concrete spreads and summers grow hotter, the quiet creatures that once stayed hidden at the edges of fields and forests are being squeezed into our streets, gardens, and stairwells. Grass snakes, timid and harmless, are suddenly appearing where we drink our coffee, where our children play.

Their presence unsettles us because it shatters the illusion that nature is “out there” and we are safely “in here.” The truth is, there’s no wall—only a thin, fraying line. We can choose to react with fear and extermination, or with curiosity and responsibility: planting small habitats, protecting green spaces, learning to live alongside what arrives. When the wild comes to us, it isn’t an invasion. It’s a message: make room, or lose more than you ever meant to.
